The Advent Giving Tree is an annual Christmas gift from the parish of Old Saint Mary's to some less fortunate people in San Francisco. This year, our tree benefits the following San Francisco agencies: Leland House, Guerrero House, Little Brothers, the Downtown Senior Center, the Riley Center, and some clients of In Home Support Service.

We ask you to pick one off the tree, go buy that gift, wrap it and return it to the bookstore or church by December 18 with the tag attached on the outside of the package to identify the gift.

Some shopping hints:

  • Its nice to include a receipt just in case something doesn't fit or doesn't work.
  • If you are buying clothes for an elder, please consider making it something easy to get into.
  • Some of our clients have asked for clothing in no specific sizes, so if you take such a tag, please make it warm, sensible clothing, sweaters, sweatshirts, etc.
  • It may be 3-4 days before a food basket is received, so go for long-lasting, non-spoiling food items.
  • If your gift is a toy that needs batteries, please include them, and think of the smiles when the present works!
  • Any time you aren't sure what to give, consider donating a gift card from one of our local food or drug stores.

Volunteers are needed, too: elves to collect money from those that would rather donate, shoppers for follow up shopping, wrappers to wrap presents, and people to help get the gifts out. Please contact Julie at (415) 288-3809 and let us know how you'd like to volunteer or to get anwers to any questions.

Thank you for your help!
