California's First Cathedral . . .

Old Saint Mary's is and has always been a vital and welcoming community of faith. As California's first Cathedral, it was built in 1854 with the support of people of many faiths. It has survived earthquakes, fires and great change in the past hundred fifty years to become one of San Francisco and indeed California's important historic landmarks.

Old Saint Mary's now faces what may be its greatest challenge. Due to a San Francisco City and County Earthquake Safety Ordinance, the old cathedral must be seismically retrofitted.
